Savannah College of Art and Design is celebrating its 40th anniversary this month—which means that its interior design program is also celebrating the big four-oh. As the industry has grown, so has SCAD’s program, with over 800 enrolled students currently working towards their interior design degrees—when the university was first founded, that number was two. Responsibilities include assisting the fashion department with presenting and conducting fits on live models to ensure fitting of garments and apply possible adjustments, recommending materials and relevant finishing techniques to students, and working on the digital fabric printer. Additionally you will help students with creating spec sheets, evaluating sample prototypes, and inspire performance solutions in constructing high-quality garments. In this position, you will lead architectural design studio courses in all areas of the curriculum and will lead additional required and elective courses in your area of expertise. Particular strengths in sustainability, prototyping, and parametric design are highly valued. The original cabin liner had to be augmented with wood paneling to cover the area where overhead storage bins had been removed. Flight deck bulkheads were removed, opening up the cockpit to full view. The center console forms a platform for the TV and stereo system, in what is now the living room area. The aircraft was completely rewired at 220 volts and has central air conditioning and heat.Next is a large bathroom complete with shower. The last section, at the rear of the aircraft, is a spacious bedroom that is really a bunkroom outfitted with three double bunk beds. The main entry door on the right side of the aircraft is sheltered by an enclosed sun deck, where there is a wood-burning furnace and gas barbecue.

In most accounts the special characteristic of "airplane" bungalows is a single room on the second floor, surrounded by windows, said to resemble the cockpit of an airplane, and designed as a sleeping room in summer weather with all-around access to breezes. While the total cost of the project hasn’t been disclosed, Hertz says that for almost $30,000, the building gained an enormous amount of material from an aircraft over 230ft long, 195ft wide, and 63ft tall, with 17,000 cubic feet of cargo space. Pre-fabricating lightweight components offsite saved a substantial amount of carbon dioxide output and construction waste.

Four months and $24,000 were spent turning the salvaged airframe into her dream home. Armed with a borrowed 9/16 wrench and a screwdriver from Cordle’s toolbox, she was allowed to remove interior panels and other odds and ends she needed from other 727s being salvaged. Cordle still refers to her as “that gutsy little grandma.”Ussery did most of the remodeling herself. Floors had to be built up in the bathroom and kitchen because they were uneven.

The MD-80, which was full of parts that needed to be removed, is the main structure Axline lives in.

President Dwight Eisenhower was the first president to fly in a helicopter in an official capacity in 1957, according to the US Naval Institute. Labaton is representing those who purchased Boeing common stock between Oct. 23, 2019 when Boeing said it was laser-focused on safety and January 24, 2024, more than two weeks after Jan. 5, when a door flew off a Boeing 737 Max during the Alaska Air flight.

This comprises the plane, land, plumbing, electrical, heating/air conditioning, and the cost of transporting the plane from the scrap yard. The house retains and exudes the essence of flight, even though the wings have been radically reconfigured from their initial position on either side of an aeroplane cabin. Now, one floats above the other in a cascading design that makes them clearly visible as aviation parts when viewed aerially. Campbell believes retired airplanes can be used as affordable housing and as airtight, floating shelters after tidal waves have washed out homes.

He added a wall in the back of the plane and built a deck and a life-sized chess set outside it.

High performance glass and cellulose insulation is used in the wings to create an energy efficient building envelope. Overall it has cost me less than $250,000 to buy both plane halves, the property and do the renovations so far. I guess I paid about $65,000 for each plane including all the shipping costs.

I took the ceiling down because it restricted my height and I used part of it. Because it's not the full plane, I put a wall up at the end and behind it is a nice patio. Some of the first matchbox toys I had were airplanes, but the very first airplane I went inside was one my dad rebuilt. He was an aircraft mechanic and flew as a pilot for Pan American World Airways for many years. There can be up to five Marine One helicopters flying at one time to obscure the president's exact location, according to the George W. Bush Presidential Library.

He paid $100,000 for it in 1999, and according to a CNBC interview with Campbell in 2022, he pays $370 per month on electric costs and property taxes. He also said he incurred several costs in moving it, staging it and refurbishing it. The plane's lavatories remained in use as intended, and it has a washer machine. He says planes are incredible structures made to withstand high pressure and winds, and would be a shame to waste.

Architectural House Styles

I moved into the MD-80 the day the water was turned on in January 2012. So I've been living in this airplane for 10 years and I'm still working on it every day. For example, I'm going to change up the floor, because it's starting to look dated.

Axline trained as a recreational pilot throughout his teens, achieving his instrument rating, an advanced aviation certificate, at 26. Shortly after that, Axline said he gave up flying to focus on his career in IT, marriage, and family life. However, while Army personnel in uniform are required to salute the president, the president doesn't have to return the gesture. The New York Times reported that President Ronald Reagan was the first president to start returning soldiers' salutes in 1981.

Joe Axline said he got the idea to turn an airplane into a house when, as a kid in the '70s, he watched a TV show  called "The Magician." The show's main character was played by Bill Bixby and traveled from city to city in a plane solving crimes. Joanne planned to move her renovated home a mile away to a new location for public display in May of 1999. Unfortunately, the plane suffered considerable damages after falling off of the moving truck and Joanne was forced to find an alternative living arrangement. With respect to the future, Campbell envisions airplane home subdivisions with dozens of airplanes, all neatly aligned in rows. When asked what advice he would have for anyone contemplating an airplane home, he said to contact him after looking at his website Pilot John Gully and his wife, Joanne, who live in New York, decided to see Campbell's famous formerly flying home while visiting their daughter, Alexa Gully, a textile designer in Portland.

'The message is repurpose, reuse, and to think what you might build out of a discard,' she told CBS News when it visited her new home. Once safely arrived at Camarillo, the nearest airport to the site, the wings had to be cut in half to position for suspension from a Chinook CH-47, the world's largest cargo helicopter, for their final journey into the remote hills. But the total emissions and embodied energy of transporting these large pieces was less than the transportation of thousands of small parts in a typical construction, and made the $8,000-an-hour [£4,800] cost of transporting the parts 'realistic'. On the other side you'll be able to look down into the wing, which will be cut out, and I will have model trains and cars there so when you look down, it looks like you're flying over land far below. I've got to have a large closet for my girlfriend's clothes and shoes. They wanted more money than I was willing to pay, but more importantly, shipping is very expensive.

Campbell has been working on a second airplane home near Miyazaki, Japan that has faced significant hurdles, according to AirplaneHomeV2.com. The most recent update on his original plane website in August 2023 said his heart is in Miyazaki, and when USA TODAY reached out for an interview, he said he maintained synchronized to Japan time. Campbell says his plane provides 1,066 square feet of "exhilarating aerospace quality living area," set up in an a studio-style apartment. He bought the DC-9 in the spring, but it took nearly a year to get it removed from the mall. A Black Hawk model called the VH-60N White Hawk can fit 11 passengers, and the Sikorsky VH-3D Sea King helicopters can fit 14, according to the George W. Bush Presidential Library.

Tom Bennington, Max Power’s president and a former 727 captain, loves to talk about building houses out of Boeing airliners. The company now has a patent on its 727 house design, which can be set up on land, in a lake or even in the ocean. The patent is for a wind-resistant habitable dwelling, which includes the fuselage of an aircraft rotatably mounted on a support column. The vertical tail fin is retained to allow the dwelling to pivot about the support column and point in the direction of the prevailing wind. Undoubtedly, the most unique airliner home of them all is Dave Drimmer’s “plane boat.” Half airplane, half boat, the unconventional habitat started life as a Boeing 307 Stratoliner, model SA307-B (serial number 1997). It was one of 10 built in the 1930s as a 33-passenger airliner.Pan American and TWA operated the remaining nine aircraft.

Axline told Insider both plane structures were 60 feet or under because that was the maximum size to transport by truck, the cheapest way to transport retired planes. Keeping the planes under that length decreased transport costs to $5,750 from $10,000, according to Axline. So when I got my pilot's license at 18—and still in high school—I would fly with my friends from Arlington Municipal Airport and show them the different scenery in the area—it was really cool. Far predating these issues, one man went on a mission to save planes from being demolished, making a home out of an old Boeing plane in Oregon. "I don't care if it goes up in value or goes down — doesn't matter to me," he said.

Then, one afternoon, he listened to a radio program featuring the Continental Airlines 727 JoAnn Ussery lived in. Campbell was on the phone the next day contacting aircraft salvage companies, checking on the possibility of acquiring a suitable aircraft. He entered into a contract with Aero Controls, based in Shelton, Wash., obtaining the retired Olympic Airways 727.Once it was flown into Hillsboro, an offsite salvage operation was performed.

The aircraft is stocked with water bottles and snacks including boxes of presidential M&Ms.

After his first ride in Marine One in 2009, Obama said that the helicopter was "very smooth" and "very impressive." Bloomberg reported that the new Sikorsky helicopters are no longer in regular use because the engines kept burning the White House lawn. Marine One also includes perks like 200 square feet of interior space and a bathroom. In case of a crash, it also has self-sealing fuel tanks and energy-absorbing landing gear to help prevent fires and extensive damage.

Frameless, structural self-supporting glass created the enclosure from the concrete slab to the wing roof. Our builder-preferred, construction-ready house plans include everything you need to build your dream home. Air Spain’s DC-8-21, serial number 45426, was originally built for and delivered to Eastern Airlines as N8605 on April 9, 1960.In December 1971, it was sold to Air Spain, who registered it as EC-BZQ. Aerovias Quisqueyana purchased the aircraft three years later, and registered it as N8605. This Dominican Republic carrier owned it until July 1978, when it was sold to American Jet Industries, who parted it out in Smyrna, Tenn.Red Lane acquired what remained of the airliner, and moved it to Ashland City, Tenn., where it was converted into a home. Reportedly, he has lived in it for over 20 years and still lives in it today.

He maintained a few original features of the plane's interior — like the shutters, windows, and some overhead bins.

Kotwicki didn’t skimp on the bathroom either, saying “we wanted to have a real bathroom with a real shower and regular-sized toilet”. Emily Howell Warner was the first woman to pilot a scheduled-passenger airliner ... While a working example has yet to be constructed, there has been substantial interest in Max Power’s 727 home design. As this story goes to press, the company is working out the technical requirements for what could be their first sale. Max Power Aerospace offers Boeing 727 homes complete and ready to move in for $290,000.

I had dreams to renovate an airplane into a home, but I put them aside, got married and had kids. Building a family and a career was great, I did well and made a lot of money writing software. It remains gutted and empty apart from the cockpit, though it's been used as storage for parts from the other plane.

Today, architecture is taking a new and surprising shape as aircraft are used in urban, forest, and desert settings – as homes or office space for out-of-the-box thinkers. Generally modern airliners are around 100 feet (30 m) long and the wing span is about the same. That means that there is a minimum land requirement of about one acre (4,000 m2). In some areas of the country suburban land of that size is available for around $15,000. It will take several tractor trailer trucks to transport the entire plane when it is dismantled.

The control wheels turn the motors on the boat and the throttles once linked to the aircraft’s four engines are now used to control the two boat motors. When singer Jimmy Buffett saw it, he included it in his book, “Where Is Joe Merchant? Additionally, he is seeking investors/partners to participate in future commercial development of the “Cosmic Muffin.” For additional information, visit It cost the men $1,800 to move the aircraft from the airport and set it up on concrete bridge pilings.

“Everything in here is just as it was when it was flying,” Kotwicki said. Here, the DC-6 Airplane House has a BBQ overlooking the incredible mountains surrounding the little oasis. From here, you make your way up the aisle (ahem, hallway) to find a guest bedroom and spacious living/dining area.

Hertz had to make sure the construction project kept progressing through obstructions and red tape – 17 government agencies had to give their approval. One point he was careful to check with aviation experts and aerospace consultants was that no ‘uplift’ would be created by the wings once they were finally in place! The roof of the house also had to be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) so pilots flying overhead – whether private jets or commercial airliners – wouldn’t mistake the house for a downed aircraft. Three major freeways were closed overnight so that a truck accompanied by seven California Highway Patrol vehicles could transport the plane parts to Camarillo Airport in Oxnard, Ventura County. With each wing weighing 20,000lbs, the only way to transport them to the remote building site in Santa Monica was by cutting them in two and flying them by helicopter – a Columbia Model 234 Commercial Chinook – to set them down on a large pile of tires. The wings were then spliced back together and hoisted onto columnar supports to form the beginnings of the floating roof.

'My client had challenged me to come up with curvilinear, feminine shapes for the building. Standing on the property, I imagined a floating roof overhanging the site to allow unobstructed views', he says. It was the timeless, uber-functional design of a Boeing 747 that inspired, and eventually formed a crucial part of, the house David Hertz built for Francine Rehwald in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, California overlooking the Pacific Ocean. A tradition of radical reuse defines the site’s storied genius loci. The fifty-five acre property is part of the historic Tony Duquette estate, defined by diverse follies that the Hollywood set designer built with repurposed industrial scrap.

This then leads you to the master bedroom where Kotwicki has managed to fit a king-sized bed and a TV. While giving supercarblondie.com a tour of the lodge, Kotwicki said the idea for the home came about because “lumber was crazy expensive” and “half of this house is already built”. You won’t find your standard economy seating either, because the aircraft has been decked out with all the creature comforts you can imagine. Once the plane was properly situated on Joanne’s property, she was able to begin the renovating process. The overhaul began in December of 1994 and lasted for four months until Joanne was finally able to reside in her lakeside plane home. Tom Bennington, president of Max Power, in the cockpit of one of his 727s, displaying a model of a Boeing used as a billboard advertisement.

A triumph of regenerative design, the 747 Wing House upcycles airplane components into poetic roof forms. The Boeing was bound for the garbage pile before S.E.A. intercepted and reimagined it as architecture. The wings and tail stabilizers were all pre-engineered as self-supporting structures, making them perfect lightweight long-span roof profiles. The project represents S.E.A.’s commitment to maximizing the longevity of building and product life-cycles in novel ways. A home is the biggest investment of your life and you don’t want to invest in something that will only last one generation.“Most modern homes are built from materials that are combustible, vermin susceptible and biodegradable,” Campbell said.

Additionally, some learners may extend their studies to accommodate work or other commitments. The MDes program exists across multiple fields of design, including User-Experience (UX), Communication, Industrial, and Fashion Design.

Architecture As Fine Art

“Rogue’s Gallery,” published by Air-India in 1977, was a catalog showcasing the airline’s most iconic travel posters produced from 1946 to 1972. The star of these posters was Air-India’s beloved mascot, the Maharaja, alias “the Rogue.” Conceived in 1946 by Bobby Kooka and illustrated by Umesh Rao, the Maharaja was initially designed for an inflight memo pad. Characterized by his oversized mustache, striped turban, corpulent belly, and aquiline nose, the mascot would go on to become the face of the airline and propel the company to the forefront of advertising genius in the mid-20th century. While AAP councillors carried posters of ‘Dalit virodhi BJP (anti-dalit BJP), a copy of the Constitution and a picture of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, BJP councillors held up posters of “House tax ki badauti band karo (Stop hike in house tax)’. BJP councillors, carrying personal speakers, also played the party’s campaign song, ‘Phir se Modiji ki sarkar dekhna chahu su’, and danced inside.

Maria Videla-Juniel, who designed the primary bathroom of the main house, also devised a welcoming entry to the Gate House. A Thibault wall covering graces the entry, and a Fibreworks runner leads guests up the stairs. A palette of whites, deep blues, and gold creates an elegant atmosphere in the formal living room, which was designed by Rachel Duarte. The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace. The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones.

“I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12. Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier.

He used a limited palette of chartreuse and dark hues that nod to the brick exterior and arranged benches to create intimate seating areas within the larger English-garden-inspired space. A brick-walled patio became a party-ready outdoor kitchen and dining area thanks to Douglas R. Santicola of Outdoor Elegance. Santicola and Monique Wood installed Caesarstone countertops fabricated by Carlito’s Way Stone to create a functional space for outdoor entertaining. Designer Mark Hermogeno paid tribute to Silver Queen Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, family room, powder room, and mudroom.

In 1922, she spent $37,000 to have the Postle Company of Los Angeles, who also built the Pasadena Playhouse, remodel it into an English Tudor Revival–style mansion, giving it the regal exterior that remains today. As the Pasadena Showcase House of Design enters its 59th year, it’s returning to a familiar setting. The Potter Daniels Manor, the English Tudor Revival–style residence that hosted the 1975 and 1996 showcase houses, has been reimagined with 30 new interior and exterior spaces for the 2024 edition, which is now open until May 19. Single-occupancy bathrooms are available on both floors of the museum, and hand sanitizer stations have been installed at convenient locations throughout the space.

Peltier and designer Marina Kelly installed an arch to divide the bedroom from the sitting area, breaking up the large space. Designer Rachel Scheff used the home’s spectacular ceiling, woodwork, and stained glass as the inspirations for her fanciful, flora- and fauna-filled foyer. “It was one of my favorite rooms in the house because it was the one that had the most history preserved, and I wanted to really celebrate that,” she told AD PRO. For her Foyer of Enchantment, Scheff installed a custom mural by Hattas Art Studios, a John Richard chandelier dripping with glass leaves, a silk wall covering by Aux Abris, and organic furniture created with Amorph Studio. “I wanted you to feel like you were transported to another time and place,” Scheff says.

Thibaut wall coverings and fabrics were used for the walls and windows, and the elegant shagreen-covered vanities are accented with gleaming fixtures by P.E. Videla-Juniel and project manager Cheryl Hardy also installed a striking shower clad in herringbone stone tile. Though modest in size, the exhibition is a reminder why Salgado is one of the few living legends in photography. Hopefully, audiences will see the work not just as a cultural signifier but as a provocation to reflect on the inequality that still defines much of our world. Salgado wants his photographs to forge conversations that lead to solutions. In the third decade of the twenty-first century, when the old problems of war and hunger still remain and the new challenges of climate change are causing millions of people to suffer, those conversations are more necessary than ever.

Despite the complaints of ill-humored politicians, the Maharaja and his cutting-edge design earned the company a myriad of advertising awards and a loyal legion of fans. While the Maharaja remains Air-India’s mascot to this day, he is most fondly remembered throughout the world for his role in India’s golden age of advertising. Air-India established an in-house art studio and also commissioned international artists to depict the Maharaja in all his antics. One of the world’s least-inhibited travelers, the Maharaja developed a reputation for his daring and panache as he adopted different personas in every destination—a snake charmer in India, a monk in Rome, a lover boy in Paris, and even a playboy bunny in New York.

Poster House aims to “cover posters from all over the world and time periods,” Knight tells Sayej of the Guardian. But perhaps above all, the museum seeks to bring posters to the foreground of design collections. Poster House strives to present “a global view of posters from their earliest appearance in the late 1800s, to their present-day use,” according to the museum’s website. The new venue spans 15,000 square feet and, as Hakim Bishara of Hyperallergic reported earlier this month, it already boasts a collection of 7,000 historical posters and 1,000 contemporary ones.

Hollyhock House’s innovative plan and bold aesthetic were catalysts for the modern California architecture movement. Schindler and Lloyd Wright both became influential design pioneers and inspired other notable figures to establish their architecture practices in Los Angeles, including Richard Neutra, Gregory Ain, and John Lautner. An inherent risk of exposure to Covid-19 exists in any public space where people are present.

“Our two main goals were to create a space that was comfortable and a little bit updated while also retaining that history and not touching or harming all the really cool features that were innate to the room and came with the house,” Meloche says. Wallpaper was added to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases, and heavy wood blinds were replaced with soft draperies and Roman shades to make the space feel lighter. The firm used a mix of fabrics and wall coverings by Ralph Lauren Home from Designers Guild throughout the space.

We cannot guarantee that you will not be exposed to Covid-19 during your visit to Poster House. Poster House does not require wearing a face mask while at the museum, but does strongly encourage visitors to do so. It might take a moment for long-time New Yorker residents visiting the Poster House to realize just what space they are wandering through. But many will fondly remember the 119 West 23rd Street building for the ground floor Tekserve repair shop that with the air of a crusty car mechanic shop served clients from the pre-Apple Store late-80s until just a few years ago. The BJP, meanwhile, nominated councillors Kishan Lal and Neeta Bisht for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor. Following the ruckus, Mayor Oberoi, AAP’s MCD in-charge Durgesh Pathak, and Leader of the House Mukesh Goel, accompanied by the party’s councillors, addressed the press. Two important permissions were required to conduct the annual mayoral polls — one from the Election Commission of India (ECI) due to the imposition of the model code of conduct because of the Lok Sabha polls and the nomination of a presiding officer by L-G Saxena. Mayor Shelly Oberoi said, “This shouldn’t have happened, this is the murder of democracy,” before adjourning the House even as councillors of both parties climbed atop the mayor’s podium and continued sloganeering.

Poster House is an affiliate member of the International Vintage Poster Dealers Association (IVPDA). It’s the first museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to posters. The museum explores everything from avant-garde design to changing societal norms, and all the fads and fashions over the last 160 years. Poster House recognizes the art and social impact of posters overlooked by existing institutions. Poster House, a neighborhood poster museum in New York, presents the impact, culture, and design of posters as historical documents and methods of contemporary visual communication. It was founded in 2015 with an eye towards filling a long-acknowledged gap in the New York cultural landscape.

The thousands of bodies climbing up and down ladders in a Brazilian gold mine; an explosion in an oil field in Kuwait; the scaly fingers of a Galápagos iguana—all share Salgado’s distinctive black-and-white visual style. Those in London can find such an attempt at Somerset House, which celebrates Salgado’s career in an exhibition running through May 6. Salgado, who turned 80 this year, is the 17th recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award and the retrospective is displayed as part of a wider exhibition of the Sony Photography awards.

“For the wall mural, I had to pick something to bring them into nature and a calming environment,” Lalikian says. For a bedroom off the nursery, Carmine Sabatella wanted to create a jewel-toned escape. “I thought, if somebody’s taking care of the baby, they have a space where they can come and feel like it’s a retreat,” Sabatella says. The designer outfitted a door handcrafted in India with a vintage mirror to create a one of a kind headboard and bathed the space in deep emerald green. The glamorous touches continue in the ensuite bath, where Sabatella added a custom mirror-tiled tub that plays off the vintage French tile floor. Maria Videla-Juniel turned the primary bath into a sumptuous retreat with hues of soft blue and brown.

Truss Design Benefits and Types of Truss

best truss bridge design

This bridge design is more complex than the Warren truss variation, and is also more expensive due to the extra materials needed to build it. The Warren Truss is a very common design for both real and model bridges. James Warren patented a design in 1848 (in England), which many attribute the name “Warren Truss”. His patent was more about the methodology of building rather than a “design”. Regardless, the Warren Truss has been around a while and has been very popular. This short section is meant to whet your appetite, but now we turn to the application of truss design to model bridge building.

Bridges, especially the kinds designed and built by human beings, have been a source of endless wonder and fascination ever since people first found ways to construct them. Perhaps you and your friends played by small streams as youngsters and instinctively tried building small makeshift bridges out of available sticks and logs. If so, you can perhaps imagine the basic way your long-ago ancestors approached the same task but out of need rather than recreation and on a larger scale. The behavior of Strauss on the Golden Gate Bridge suggests he was a stuck-up, vengeful person with a poor sense of ethical practice.

Structural Analysis and Design of Truss Bridges

I hope that this article helped you understand the different types of trusses and how to go further from here. Now, that you got an understanding of what type of trusses we use in structural engineering, you can learn about loads, because every truss is exposed to loads. 💡Be aware, that there are other variants of the queen post truss with diagonals from the tie beam to the rafter or with a vertical post from the ridge to the centre of the straining beam. The diagonals/verticals are in tension 🔴 and compression 🔵, as you can see in the picture below. A line load which represents the self-weight of the bridge deck is applied to the bottom chord. When used as a roof structure, the loads are applied on the top chord of the truss.

Examining the Best Truss Designs: Which Truss Bridge Types Are Available and Which to Choose?

All the vertical, horizontal, and diagonal members are placed below the bridge decking. The line load leads to compression 🔵 in the inclined top chords, the outer vertical members and the diagonals, while the bottom chord and inner posts act in tension 🔴. Truss bridges, unlike other bridge designs, are able to carry roadway within their structure. This is perhaps why they’re such a popular option for bridge builders.

For this project, you will be designing and building a bridge truss, which is a type of beam. The braces of a truss form a frame which can effectively transfer load forces throughout the structure. As part of the design process, you will learn how to use an online simulation program to show how load forces are distributed through the bridge truss you design. Before you test your prototype trusses, try to use the information from the simulation program to predict which of your designs will be the strongest. Signage, websites, and other sources have claimed that the bridge has 1,200,000 rivets in it. This does not appear to be true, based on other sources including discussion with riveting expert Vern Mesler, as well as comparisons to other bridges of similar scale.

The top and bottom chord are under larger forces, even though the total load is the same. Thus, if you want your school project bridge to be able to hold more weight then try to spread out the force across the top of the bridge. The floor beams of the section will need to be designed as a composite beam, taking into account the interaction of the concrete deck.

Truss Bridge Designs

As we have explained the definition of a truss, let’s explore its benefits. When designed correctly, trusses are an efficient way to span long distances whilst minimizing the amount of material used. This is because the internal loads of the members are induced axially (in the direction of the member) in the form of compression or tension. This means less material can be used, and the system as a whole is more efficient, as the force is distributed among a number of members. The line load leads to compression 🔵 in the top chords and the diagonals inclined towards the outside, while the bottom chord and diagonals inclined towards the center act in tension 🔴.

Design of the Web Members (Verticals and Diagonals)

By guaranteeing that the neutral axes of all members meeting at a node intersect at a single location in three-dimensional space, secondary forces and hence stresses can be reduced. Derivatives of the Fink truss include the Double Fink and the Fan truss types. Double Fink trusses are essentially Fink trusses that repeat the pattern twice on either side. If the most basic Fink truss can be characterized by a double-V, then a double fink would look like a double-W. Fan trusses are essentially Fink trusses that have their web members ‘fan out’ from the joints at the bottom, usually with the addition of vertical members. An example of a Warren Truss, and its axial forces under a distributed load is shown below.

The line load leads to compression 🔵 in the top chords, the outer diagonals and the vertical posts, while the bottom chord and inner diagonals act in tension 🔴. Loads such as self-weight, wind, snow and live load apply on the inclined rafters, which then distribute the loads through the various members down to the 2 supports. Wood is relatively weak in both compression and tension, but it has almost always been widely available and inexpensive. Wood has been used effectively for small bridges that carry light loads, such as footbridges. Engineers now incorporate laminated wooden beams and arches into some modern bridges.

The availability of numerous commercial design software has made the analysis and design of 3D truss bridges easier than it was in the past. The suspended spans consist of main cables, 36.5 inch (93 cm) wide, that are structural wire strand cables. The main cables have grooved cable bands which hold the suspender cables each of which are composed of four separate structural wire ropes. Looking closely at the bridge, the absence of rivets on the enclosure is an indication that it is in fact a non-structural enclosure, rather than the actual bracing. The suspended spans have stiffening trusses that are riveted Warren deck trusses. The stiffening trusses appear to retain the majority of their original rivets and members.

The beams that compose the bents have cutouts that are supposed to make the beams look like they have riveted lattice bars. Given the fact that the Golden Gate Bridge is so large that most people don't look at it up close, this may be a minor issue. If the method used by Chicago for replacing built-up beams on historic bridges was followed the result would have been better, if not perfect. Chicago fully replicates built-up beams it replaces on historic bridges, with the only exception being that bolts are substituted for rivets. Although the bolts do not look as nice as rivets, they do a much better job of replicating the original design and they present a more genuine visual appearance.

However in reality, the Golden Gate Bridge was an odd project for Strauss to take on and he also doesn't even deserve much credit for it. As many bridge experts know, Strauss's real history is with his extensive work with movable bridges, particularly trunnion bascule bridges such as those found in abundance in Chicago. So extensive was his work that bascule bridges based off his ideas and designs are often called "Strauss Trunnion" bascule bridges. He is undoubtedly one of the most important individuals in the history of movable bridges. In contrast, the relative lack of experience that Strauss had with large fixed bridges seems to have revealed itself in a couple ways with the Golden Gate Bridge. While this proposed bridge had a fascinating and unusual appearance, it was no where near as graceful and aesthetically pleasing, and it was not well received, and ultimately rejected.

The stiffness method can also be used to calculate node displacements first, and then member forces. Planar – By connecting more truss triangles, we get planar structures that share the load that is placed on them. Most commonly, the planar design consists of the single repeating pattern and are most commonly used fro building of roofs and bridges.

FRP truss bridges are lightweight which makes them easy to transport and can be installed without heavy equipment. A suspension bridge carries vertical loads through curved cables in tension. These loads are transferred both to the towers, which carry them by vertical compression to the ground, and to the anchorages, which must resist the inward and sometimes vertical pull of the cables. The suspension bridge can be viewed as an upside-down arch in tension with only the towers in compression.
